With recent modern digitization efforts taking place in the country, Italy is surely becoming a new digital nomad hotspot within Europe by offering a digital nomad visa.
Italy digital nomad visa applicants may bring their family members to Italy with purposes of family reunification. Remote workers living in Italy with the digital nomad visa can also expect to pay local taxes, such as social security, welfare, and income. They may also request a VAT number and obtain an Italian fiscal code (codice fiscale).
It’s also important to note that you must apply for the Italy digital nomad visa at an Italian consulate in your country of residence. You may not apply for the visa while already in Italy.
Italy Digital Nomad Visa Requirements
Valid Passport – Your passport must be valid while applying for the visa
Earn at least 2,335€ per month – You must meet the minimum income requirement, which is 3x the national minimum wage
For couples, the main applicant must earn at least 3,153€ per month
For a family of three, the main applicant must earn at least 3,425€ per month
For each additional dependent, the monthly income requirement increases by 275€
Work Remotely – You must work remotely as a freelancer or employee for a company or clients located outside of Italy
Highly Skilled Worker – You must qualify as a highly-skilled worker, which means having a university degree OR post-secondary qualification of at least three years OR five years of professional experience OR three years of professional experience (acquired in the previous seven years) for managers and specialists working in the field of information and communication technologies
6 Months of Remote Work Experience – You must demonstrate that you have worked remotely for the last six months
International Health Insurance – You must have health insurance coverage during your stay in Italy
Clean Criminal Record – You must have a clean criminal record from the last five years
Address of Accommodations – You must have suitable accommodations for the validity of your visa (12-months) in Italy
Residency - yes after 5 years
Steps to Apply
To apply for the Italy digital nomad visa, you must go in person to an Italian consulate in your country of residence.
Step 1: Gather Documents
We recommend scheduling your visa appointment at your local Italian embassy or consulate after you have gathered the necessary documentation.
To apply for the Italy digital nomad visa, you must submit the following:
Copy of Valid Passport
Passport Photos Abiding by Schengen Visa Photo Requirements
Proof of Income (bank statements and payslips)
Proof of Qualifications (University Degree, Post-Secondary Qualifications, etc.)
Declaration of Remote Work from Employer
Proof of Remote Work of at least 6 Months in the Industry
International Health Insurance Policy
Criminal Background Check
One-Way Ticket Reservation to Italy
Accommodations Booking or Lease in Italy
Depending on the consulate you apply through, you may have to translate your documents into Italian by an accredited translator. Additionally, your criminal background check must have an apostille.
Step 2: Attend Visa Appointment
You will submit your completed visa application form and your documents during your appointment to apply for the Italy digital nomad visa at the consulate.
There is also a visa fee of $124.60 that you must pay at this time.
Step 3: Wait for Approval
It can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to receive approval for your Italy digital nomad visa.
Step 4: Apply for Residence Permit
Once you receive approval of your Italy digital nomad visa, you will have eight days from entering Italy to apply for a residence permit or permesso di soggiorno.
You will pick up a Yellow Kit (kit giallo) from a Poste Italiane office and complete the forms inside. After completing the forms and including the necessary documents, you will return the kit to Poste Italiane where they will send it to Questura or the police headquarters and provide a date and time for your biometrics appointment to receive your residence permit.
